Doris Peltier is an Aboriginal HIV-positive woman. Since being diagnosed with AIDS in 2001, she has been involved in HIV/AIDS activism within the Aboriginal community at the regional, national and more recently at the international level with the International Indigenous Working Group on HIV/AIDS.
She has served on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network filling her current role of Aboriginal Women and Leadership Project Coordinator as well as APHA Advocate. Her work at CAAN has involved coordinating the development, consultation process with 300+ women and the writing of a CAAN Aboriginal Women’s Strategic Action Plan on HIV/AIDS. She played a pivotal role in the establishment of CAAN VOW (Voices of Women), a standing committee of 14 strong Aboriginal women who will monitor the strategic action for five years.
Doris has also worked in various capacities with a number of national/regional partners and collaborators; some of which include the Public Health Agency of Canada, First Nations Inuit Health Branch, CATIE, CTAC, CAS, OHTN, BCPWA and PASAN. She has also worked extensively within the regions with numerous AASOs, some which include Ontario Aboriginal HIV/AIDS Strategy, All Nations Hope AIDS Network, Healing Our Spirit, Healing Our Nations, Red Road HIV/AIDS Network, and Kimamow Atoskanow Foundation.
