I, Roger Tam, am a PHA and a pharmacist with 17 years of experience. I graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1999. As well, I am a recent graduate from the Michener Institute of Applied Science.
I am accredited as a certified diabetes educator (CDE), smoking cessation expert (QUIT), and HIV/STI educator.
Since 2004, I have been a HIV/STI pre/post-test educator at Nine Circles Community Health Centre (NCCHC) in Winnipeg. In 2005, I was elected to the Board of Directors of Nine Circles and in 2008 became board president. I was re-elected in 2014.
Presently I am the clinical pharmacist and board secretary at Our Own Health Centre (a gay men’s health centre). I am in charge of reviewing medical charts, providing clinical input on treatment regimens and working with clients on drug coverage.
Over the past decade, I have been honoured with numerous provincial and national awards and accolades relating to my volunteer and work experiences in the field of HIV and gay men’s health. Some of the awards include Minister of Health’s letter of recognition (2007), Takeda Magnum Opus Award (2013), the Award for Volunteerism from His Honourable Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba (2013), and the Commitment to Care and Service Award in the category of Charitable Works (2014) and most recently the pharmacist of the year award (2016).
I can use my experience as a catalyst to help CTAC’s mission to “develop and implement policy and programs…for Canadians living with HIV and viral hepatitis.”
